MEXICO CITY
The capital city of Mexico is one of the major Latin American financial hubs. It is located inside the Valley of Mexico, also called the ‘Basin of Mexico’, is made up of gorges and plateaus that lie at the height of 2,240 meters from the sea level.
The city was founded in 1325 by the Mexica people, followed by the Aztecs and the Spanish rulers. Mexico City was constructed by draining the Lake Texcoco and the city is slowly but steadily sinking in the ground. The subtropical highland climate in Mexico City is pleasant.

There are TWO international airports in Mexico City. AIFA (the newest one), AIMC, also an international airport but closer to the city. AIFA will take you about 45-1 hour to get into the city while AIMC will take you about 30 minutes depending on traffic.
UBER:
Uber does work in MXC, however, when trying to grab an uber for our return flight home through AIFA Uber did not work. I’m not sure if it was because that airport was so far away or just a glitch in the uber system. I had tried over and over again, cancelling and requesting new rides but it wouldn’t locate a driver. Out of desperation our hotel called us a taxi which did end up costing a LOT. What should have been a $15-30 uber ended up costing $140 USD in a private taxi. It was a very nice car though! What can ya do… Our flight out of AIFA ended up being late and we made it just in time to an empty (but very large and impressive) airport with no lines.
The typical Uber ride around Mexico City was around $20 USD. Each ride was safe and comfortable.
UBER pick up at AICM airport into Mexico City (Reforma) – Head to Terminal 1, Gate 3. AICM has specific uber pick up locations throughout the airport so check your app to see where the nearest one for you is.
Uber cost from Mexico City Airport to Sofitel Reforma was $15 or 299 pesos.
METRO:
I have taken the public metro years ago and remember it being quite easy and very cheap (5 pesos). There are 12 connecting lines that go to every major point in the city! From AICM airport you will walk briefly from terminal 1 to Terminal Aérea Station line 5, Politécnico (yellow line).
METRO BUS:
There is a metrobus located at Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. There is a designated luggage storage, reserved wheel chair seating, and tickets can be purchased using a smartcard. Smartcard machines are located at every terminal. It does not offer change so put in the exact amount you wish to purchase. The card costs 15 pesos and the trip ticket is around 6 pesos.
ENTRY
You will need a passport in order to enter mexico. Covid test or proof of vaccination is not needed for Mexico entry.
You will need to fill out a tourist card when crossing the border through car, foot, or on the plane when you land. Visa is not needed.
CBX
Many Californians, like myself, buy our tickets out of Tijuana and cross the border via San Diego. The flight tickets are half the price and it is extremely easy using CBX to cross the border. There are safe and secure parking lots where you can leave your car, or you can Uber. (I usually just uber for around $45 from my home). Parking is around $20/per day depending on the lot you choose.
CBX tickets round trip cost around $30 per person and can be used within a year of purchasing. Once you buy the ticket online (or at the border) you will receive a ticket/QR code. You simply just scan this along with your boarding pass and follow a bridge to Mexico, literally! Immigration is one of the easiest I’ve experienced from both sides. US immigration always scare me but they’re a lot nicer at CBX.
Not only are plane tickets cheaper, but you also do not need a covid test upon reentering like you would if you were to fly into the US.
CBX is extremely easy to use. There are signs everywhere with arrows telling you where to go step by step. All in all it usually takes me around 20 minutes to pass through depending on the immigration line (which is always smaller than the airport line).
